Juan Diego Amador was born in Tenerife, where he grew up surrounded by nature and developed a twin passion from an early age: geography and the mountains. His first major ascent was Mont Blanc at the age of 18 — he didn't reach the summit, but it was the turning point that led him to train as an alpinist and mountain and canyon guide.
In 2004 he reached the summit of Everest, becoming the first person from the Canary Islands to do so. Since then he has completed more than forty significant ascents around the world, including four eight-thousanders, the Seven Summits on his first attempt, and the opening of a 900-metre route on a virgin peak in the Indian Himalaya that earned him a Piolet d'Or nomination in 2017.
His activity also extends to the world's great polar landscapes: he has crossed the Jostedalsbreen glacier in winter, completed the Shackleton traverse in South Georgia and explored the Patagonian Ice Fields.
In his daily life he combines expeditions with his work as a Geography teacher and trainer of mid-mountain and canyon guides.
Juan Diego Amador — geographer, alpinist and mountain guide — recounts his ascent of Nevado Ausangate (6,385 m.) in the Peruvian Andes: seven days of trekking through the Vilcanota range and twenty hours of climbing to reach one of South America's great summits.
